LARRY MIALIK , Grinder

Lives in Madison, Wisconsin

A native of Clifton, NJ, I graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Business Administration, selected 1st team All-Big Ten Football as well as Honorable Mention All-American. I continued in football as an NFL tight-end for the Atlanta Falcons (1972-75) and the San Diego Chargers (1976). I am married and have one son and one daughter. I entered professional racing during the America’s Cup Challenge Campaign of 1986/87 then went on to the Maxi World Championships from 1987-1991 – winning 1st place on Matador2 in 1990 & 1991. I have done 8 Newport Bermuda Races, Miami Montego Bay Race/Pineapple Cup (record elapsed time), Kenwood Cup, Columbus Cup; Liberty Cup; Nippon Cup; Lymington Cup/World Match Racing Championship; Endeavour vs. Shamrock J-Class Regatta in 1989. In 1992 I was Fitness Coordinator and sailor during the winning America3 Cup campaign and did two Cup campaigns with Dennis Connors on Stars and Stripes in 2000 & 2003. I have raced on Shockwave since 2010.

Born I Sandusky, OH, I Graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology. I started sailing when I was 15 and have worked professionally since 1978 as Captain, mostly on race boats. Between racing and deliveries I’m guessing that I’ve logged at least 125k miles. Races include: 8 Transpacs, 3 Fastnets, 10 Bermuda races, 25 Mexico races to ports like Cabo San Lucas, PV and Manzanillo, 1 Hobart Race, 3 Middle Sea Races, 50′ circuit for 4 years, 1 Cape to Rio Race (2000), 3 Cowes Weeks, 8 Sardinia Cups, 2 Admiral cups, 10 Big Boat series, 4 Kenwood Cups, 8 Copa del Rey, 12 NYYC events, 7 Antigua Race weeks, 5 St Marten events, 3 Halifax races, 10 Key West Race weeks, 10 Ensenada Races, 6 Viole de St Tropez events, Swan 45 events for 3 years. Between 1979-2010 I have worked on Santa Cruz 50 & Santa Cruz 70, Kathmandu; International 50′s, Champosa V & VII; Maxi, Sagamore ; Swan 45 & Swan 82, Captivity; and joined Shockwave in 2010.
